I am completely head over heels in love with this home on 27 acres along the banks of South Carolina’s Kiawah River, designed by architect Stanley Dixon and designer Tammy Connor. The owners of the land wanted the home to connect to nature and have a strong sense of history. I adore how it appears to have been added over time with connected buildings. The interior is spectacular – there’s somewhat of an ethereal quality in some of the spaces and materials such as lime-washed brick, heart pine flooring in 12-inch-wide planks, plaster walls, painted trim help tell the story. Sydney-based architects and builders CplusC designed a modest retreat nestled high in the bushland of Sydney’s Palm Beach for a semi-retired couple and their family. Rather than imposing on the steep, rocky site, the home is lightly perched among the treetops, celebrating simplicity and nature. Built using prefabricated elements and oversized hardwood beams, it avoids excavation and embraces the landscape. Expansive timber decks and a cargo net bay offer tranquil spaces to relax, immersed in sunshine, birdsong, and breeze. The design reflects the clients’ wish for a compact, low-impact sanctuary grounded in humility and connection to place.

I declare that every Cotswolds residence needs a party barn! It makes complete sense if you have a barn on your property that needs some love. In this case it involves exposed stone walls, tons of storage, reclaimed wood, a massive 20 person dining table that can move out of the way to make room for a dance floor, a kitchen with bi-fold doors to close it off so the dinner mess can wait until morning, and lots of space for guests to sleep. This resurrected Victorian farmhouse turned weekend cottage is absolute perfection. The wooden slatted ceilings, simple wood trim, brick fireplaces, the happiest of bright yellow walls, the prettiest wallpapers (in particular ‘Blackthorn Autumn’ by Morris & Co. in the stairs/upstairs hallway), a simple neutral wood kitchen, the coziest bedrooms all make for the perfect family getaway.
