Montauk Beach House

Posted on Tue, 14 Aug 2018 by midcenturyjo

Black and white, a surprise of old gold timber linings, enough retro classics to be cool not ostentatious, enveloping textures and the promise of a good surf break. Not your usual Hamptons holiday getaway and I for one am glad! Montauk Beach House by Space Exploration.

Bellevue Hill Villa

It’s all about easy living. Warm, relaxed, casually stylish. A hint of tropical, a touch of beach and loads of urban cool. This Sydney apartment by H Interior Design is perfect for its young owners. Standout design features for me? the marble and timber stairs and a sleek ensuite bathroom.

Modern in an old mouldings shop

Posted on Tue, 17 Jul 2018 by midcenturyjo

An old plaster moulding shop on the ground floor of an early 20th century building in Barcelona was dark and derelict until architectural firm Valentí Albareda created a magical light filled home with central courtyard and a distinct modern flavour inside its rustic exposed brick walls. Love the almost sculptural feel to elements such as the staircase and shelving.

Another fine example from the portfolio of Melbourne-based Zen Architects. The modern extension to the rear of this terrace house uses a striking materials palette of slate, timber and concrete block.A thoroughly modern look, striking, light filled with just a touch of retro.

Modern landscaping inspiration

I was recently searching for landscape inspiration because my yard is a pitiful mess and came across the portfolio of New York based design-build firm Brook Landscape (Jo featured their work before here and here). They are one of my favourite sources for small-space, urban landscaping. They create such beautiful, creative and incredibly useful spaces that I think my idea of an old-style English landscape to match the style of my 1950’s craftsman house may be out the window. Note: I can’t stop staring at those stairs above!!!

I absolutely LOVE this idea of one of the steps becoming a huge bench
