An old plaster moulding shop on the ground floor of an early 20th century building in Barcelona was dark and derelict until architectural firm Valentí Albareda created a magical light filled home with central courtyard and a distinct modern flavour inside its rustic exposed brick walls. Love the almost sculptural feel to elements such as the staircase and shelving.

Another fine example from the portfolio of Melbourne-based Zen Architects. The modern extension to the rear of this terrace house uses a striking materials palette of slate, timber and concrete block.A thoroughly modern look, striking, light filled with just a touch of retro.

I was recently searching for landscape inspiration because my yard is a pitiful mess and came across the portfolio of New York based design-build firm Brook Landscape (Jo featured their work before here and here). They are one of my favourite sources for small-space, urban landscaping. They create such beautiful, creative and incredibly useful spaces that I think my idea of an old-style English landscape to match the style of my 1950’s craftsman house may be out the window. Note: I can’t stop staring at those stairs above!!!
