The art of the vignette / shelfie

Posted on Wed, 27 Jul 2016 by KiM

Anyone can throw together a bunch of knick knacks and call it a vignette or shelfie. I personally feel it takes talent to pull it off and not want to change a thing. Like this beautiful armoire styled by interior designer Nora Schneider

I love a show house. They are a dream, a fantasy, a platform for interior designers and decorators to weave their magic. All in the name of beauty. All in the name of style. All in the name of pushing the boundaries. This artful living room at the 2016 San Francisco Decorator Showcase by Antonio Martins Interior Design is inspired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s expansion. The designer has created a space that celebrates the city’s vibrant creative energy and emphasizes the intersection of art and design. With its white lacquered walls, hot rolled steel floors, curated collection of vintage and cutting edge furniture as well as striking art it’s like a beautiful Salon, a meeting place for aesthetes, intellectuals and artists or, in our case, like-minded design lovers. Perhaps if you are in San Francisco you can visit this room and tell me how stunning it is in person. The San Francisco Decorator Showcase is open now through to May 30.

More from Kate Hume

I have always loved this French manor house by Dutch designer Kate Hume. I had seen glimpses of it but never the whole house. On a recent revisit to the website, much to my delight, I discovered that there were more photos and, well, I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It’s stunning. The dialogue between old and new, the casual luxury. Kim first featured a room or two back in 2008 and I love how good design stands the test of time and the foibles of fads.

Maximalist

So much to see. So much to touch, to turn over, to stroke. I would be the most rude of guests fidgeting in my seat, jumping up to flick through a book, pick up a trinket, open a box, to take in the beauty. Somehow I don’t think the owner of this Birmingham, Alabama home, interior designer, artist and neo-traditionalist William McLure would mind too much. I think maximalists love to display their treasures and to have others secretly covet them. I know I do 😉

Like a stylish second skin

I love all interior styles, from contemporary and traditional to boho and Scandinavian, Hollywood Regency, mid century modern and even minimalist. You name it and I’ll find something to love. I think, though, that my favourite homes are those with interesting architectural bones filled with pieces that reflect the owner’s personality. They don’t have to be new or expensive. They can even be a little beaten up and too well loved. It goes back to the joy of living in a space that over time becomes your second skin.
