A taste of retro

Posted on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 by midcenturyjo

An old apartment given a fresh new “do”. Vintage furniture sits happily with polished concrete floors while lighting old and new defines the different zones. It’s bright and fresh, bursting with personality and a just little irreverent. Love the wall of Tretchikoff and David Lynch ladies. Secretly though I would sell my soul for the blue Murano dragon’s tears chandelier. Sigh! A fun apartment makeover by interior design studio Anatomy Design. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa the design duo of Andrea Kleinloog and Megan Hesse has hit just the right balance between high kitsch and high style.

Stalking on a Saturday

Posted on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 by midcenturyjo

It is sooooooo hot in my part of the world at the moment. Most of the country is experiencing a heatwave. Day after day of unrelenting high temperatures, the threat of bushfires and smoke curling into everything. Oh to be sitting at the table in this house, a large pitcher of iced tea making rings on the wood, waiting for the sea breeze to roll in and annoy the pages of the Saturday papers spread in disarray before me. In my fantasy the fire of course is not lit! What a lovely beachy home perched above the trees. Books, vintage furniture and tapa cloth. Perfect. What a great way to start the real estate stalking year. Link here while it lasts.

Week of stalking 3

I’ve left Sydney and now I’m peeping through the curtains of this house in Caulfield South, Melbourne. Fun, fab, fresh and loaded with vintage treasures. Vibrant colour bouncing off white walls. A wonderfully creative family home. Just what I would expect from a stylist. Wonder if she is having a garage sale before she moves? I don’t only want the house, I want half the contents. My new side table

Posted on Sun, 2 Dec 2012 by KiM

Over a year ago I blogged a really cool idea I saw on The Selby – a vintage safe as a side table.

Low and behold, I recently came across one on Kijiji and my husband nearly lost his marbles. Turns out he is a huge fan of vintage safes too! Yesterday we drove for what seemed like hours to some little town out in the middle of nowhere and arrived at the home of a really nice man who sold us a very similar safe for $250 (I’m thinking this was a steal based on what little I’ve seen via some quick googling). It took 3 men to heave the 300 lb (or so) safe into our vehicule and somehow my husband and I managed to carry it into the house last night. Now it takes pride of place in the corner of my living room. The previous owner does not remember the combination (he’s had it for over 40 years – when he was younger while drinking with his buddies they’d see who could lift it) so we’ll have to figure out how to open it or find someone who can. In the meantime, I think it makes a sweet side table. 🙂

Natalie Jeffcott

I came across Australian photographer Natalie Jeffcott‘s work on MilK magazine’s website and after perusing her portfolio of interiors I am a new fan. I love how she has captured such fun and spaces so simply yet perfectly. P.S. In September Natalie and 2 other photographers opened Nomofoto – a studio and sometime gallery space in North Melbourne, and they have an online shop with some reeeeeeally cool prints.
