Check out this project we received from The Hub Design based in Shoreditch, London: Situated opposite Saint Pancras, the historical Queen Alexandra Mansions in Kings Cross is one of the most unique buildings of its kind. Each flat has its own layout, history and personality. In particular this property – a Bauhaus inspired project in which the Hub Design Limited designed, built, project managed and sourced everything for the property from the ground up. Our challenge was to create a minimal, stylish modern living space for art and design lovers, whilst providing storage solutions necessary in a small one bedroom property. Classic Eames furniture was used in conjunction with custom built shelving unit and a made-to-measure work space. I’m not usually a fan of primary colours but this is kind of fun! It’s nice to see designers who aren’t afraid of colour and go outside the box. 

Back in ’09 I blogged a project of New York based interior designer Frances Herrera. She recently sent along a new project (that I absolutely fell in love with) that is near and dear to her heart.

This home is located in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. This project is my pride and joy as it’s the home I share with my husband. When we purchased the apartment, it was in serious need of a makeover. Being a pre-war apartment, It has lots of charm and character along with lots of years of “wear and tear” and needed some updating. The renovation took  3 months which included replacing doors and moldings, sanding and custom staining floors, installing new ceiling lighting, painting and lots of other odds and ends. The overall result is a contemporary, serene environment, that feels peaceful, fresh and inspiring. It’s a perfect neutral canvas where I can showcase my art, collected objects, and test out accessories and looks for my residential design projects.
My most favorite aspect of my home, which is the main reason why we purchased the space,  is the southern exposure which fills the apartment with beautiful light that is critical for me as an interior designer. I can never have a bad day in the space, it’s my ultimate sanctuary!

I stumbled upon Montreal-based firm Gauvreau Design recently while doing some googling. They seem to specialize more in commercial projects than residential but I had to share, particularly the kitchen in the first few photos. I think it’s brilliant how the stove and fridge are housed in their own built-in sections, and the lighting strip that runs into the hood fan. 

Clever custom joinery in this McMahon’s Point, Sydney renovation and extension by architects Stanic Harding. A California Bungalow style home was given a modern take while retaining period features like the bay windows. The new addition respects the street appeal while not hiding its existence or pretending to be what it is not. A change of level in the small backyard provides an opportunity for decking and seating that will soften over time.
