The Cloud House

Posted on Thu, 14 Nov 2013 by midcenturyjo

Every cloud has a silver lining… unless it’s the Cloud House in Fitzroy North in Melbourne by McBride Charles Ryan. The Edwardian era facade is left relatively untouched out of respect to the existing streetscape. The old house’s original interior has been painted white with a carpet of flowers providing the surprise. Linking the old and the new is a red box, the heart of the home, the kitchen. What opens beyond is a fantastical cloud shaped living area. No silver lining though. Warm timbers cocoon the space. Unexpected, child like but meticulously crafted.

Covet Garden – a modern Victorian

Posted on Wed, 13 Nov 2013 by KiM

I seem to be a little slow trying to keep up with the latest in blogs, magazines etc. these days, but I was grateful last night to catch up on the last couple of issues of one of my favourite online magazines, and Canadian to boot, Covet Garden. Last month’s issue ROCKED, featuring the Toronto home of Shaun (co-owner of a shop selling handmade works by mostly Canadians) and Todd (owner of a flower shop). It’s an 1875 Victorian that they have spent 13 years renovating, and pimped it out with an eclectic mix of mid-century (ie. grandma’s couch) and modern furniture and art. Now this is an inspiring and creative home!

Serena Eller Vainicher update

Posted on Wed, 13 Nov 2013 by KiM

It’s been a few years since Jo featured the mesmerizing images by Italian photographer Serena Eller Vainicher, and it seems that her work just keeps on inspiring. Eye-catching and perfectly composed. European spaces always intrigue me. Who else can get away with somewhat tacky patterned tile floors?

Stalking in a storm

Posted on Wed, 13 Nov 2013 by midcenturyjo

At this time of the year severe electrical storms are a daily feature where I live. I’m racing a roiling storm cloud as I type this. Please excuse me if I don’t stay on too long. I’d hate to fry my computer. This Northcote, Melbourne house is by FMD Architects and the garden by Eckersley Garden Architecture. Oh that lightning strick was a bit too close. I’ll have to leave you to stalk this house by yourself. Link here while it lasts.

Hotel San José

It’s mid week and I’m still craving a getaway. Today I’m dreaming of Hotel San José in Austin, Texas. Concrete floors and minimalist interiors. Funky, cool and comfortable. And oh the lush green surrounds. What more could you want?
