Reader’s home

Posted on Wed, 15 Nov 2017 by midcenturyjo

When long time reader Vika Pecherskikh of Compelling View Interiors shared these photos of her home I immediately knew she was a kindred spirit. You see she has an addiction to love of beautiful chairs just like I do. In every room there is a vintage treasure. Her decorating firm in  the Washington DC metro area is passionate about homes and emotions they evoke, creating spaces that have a sense of narrative and authenticity. You can see more of Vika’s ever evolving home and the treasures she finds on her instagram page.

An open concept mid-century remodel

Now this is one seriously cool remodel. It is so good I sent some photos of the kitchen to one of my sisters who is looking to renovate hers soon. I hope to gawd hers ends up looking similar. Not many kitchens have a little funk like this one. Kudos to Veneer Designs on a job really well done. Let’s start with a before photo:

Look at it now!

A recently transplanted couple of creatives, who were also expecting twins during the remodel, had a clear vision of how to update and refine their post and beam home tucked into the treetops of Pacific Palisades. Taking cues from nature as well as the home’s architecture, an earthy and brave interpretation of midcentury design was applied to the new kitchen layout and adjoining spaces.  Mahogany cabinets with color blocking, red oak rift cut wall paneling, epoxy floors, glazed thin brick specialty tile, and ceramic light pendants commissioned from Heather Rosenman come together to create a unique composition. And here’s a before photo of the living room…

Stalking 2

Not fair! Throwing a tantrum! Not enough photos! I want to see more and I’m too far away to go to an actual open for inspection. My little boho heart likes what it sees… but I WANT TO SEE MORE! Calm done Jo. Breath. That’s better. I’m stalking a cute little cottage in Sydney’s Avalon Beach. Link here while it lasts.

A period home with a modern extension… it’s what Australian architects do so well. Oh and seamless indoor outdoor integration of course. I’m stalking a Queens Park, Sydney home with a cozy but funky front (the facade is a dead giveaway that something special lurks within) and a split-level extension featuring a spacious parents’ retreat and a huge open-plan kitchen/dining/living zone with sliding glass walls. The design is by Fox Johnston Architects. Link here while it lasts.

Do you love the modern industrial look? Exposed brick walls and loft like spaces make you weak at the knees? How about rust and steel, old wooden benches and Edison bulbs hanging in wire cages? You’re not alone. Modern industrial furniture is one of the biggest styles trending over the past few years and it’s definitely here to stay. It’s one thing to live in an untouched warehouse in a big city or to have the cash to splash on fabulous old pieces that dealers have pulled from the depths of a derelict factory but how do the rest of us get the look?

Luckily I found this fabulous collection from Memoky. Created by a team of artists who are committed to making it accessible and affordable, Memoky hand selects the highest quality products crafted from the finest materials from factories that share their commitment to accessible art & design. What does that mean for you? A carefully curated range of furniture with a luxury look but without the huge price tag. I’ve chosen a few of my favourites from their range but I’ll tell you the truth, it was hard to keep it to just these few. Whether you’re after seating or storage, lighting or accessories, beds or desks, Memoky has the right piece to build your modern industrial look from scratch or just add that final statement piece you need.
