Lucy Fenton

Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 by midcenturyjo

Ever imagine what it would be like living in your favourite shop? Well if the wonderland of a store Fenton & Fenton is that shop then 33 Wattle Rd, Hawthorne is where you should be living. As one of a number of creatives asked to style a display apartment last year Lucy Fenton brought her shop to life in an otherwise boring cookie cutter apartment. Colourful, quirky, beautiful her apartment showcased all that her Prahan shop has come to stand for. And now her newly launched website brings her shop to life for those who can’t walk through the doors. A must see gallery if you love colour with a touch of ethnic aesthetic, vintage with midcentury re-invented and the unexpected, always the unexpected. Love!

Colour

Take a stark white shell and have some fun. Exclamation marks of colour restrained by dark floors and blindingly white walls. Push it even further with purple psychedelia in the bedroom then blow the whole thing apart with a bathroom that is definitely a knockout. Interior designer Craig Spencer is known for his broodingly dark portfolio. His latest project in Pott’s Point takes his dark luxury and turns it inside out. Serious fun for the seriously brave. (You can see more of Craig’s work on Desire to Inspire here, here and here.)

Reader request – purple

Today’s reader request comes from Kate: “I’m moving to Florence, Italy in January (so exciting!) and the apartment we are renting is partially furnished. In the living area there are — gulp — two purple velvet armchairs and a purple sofa. They are in great shape and high quality pieces, I just never thought I’d be living with so much purple! I’ve read enough design blogs to know there has got to be a design solution to tame and balance the colors.” My 2 cents = embrace the purple! I wouldn’t try to tame the purple because why not have fun with it (plus I think it could easily look like you’re trying to hard to make the purple disappear). If you’re allowed to paint I’d either paint the walls (or at least the main wall) the same purple as the furniture or a lighter, lavendar shade. (If you can’t paint then I’d get a huge canvas and a couple cans of purple paint and do some funky simple art). Dark charcoal walls, purple velvet drapes would be hot. Accessorize with purple, and black and white geometric patterns. Below are some photos I found of living rooms with purpley sofas/chairs, and then a few photos where bold coloured furniture matches wall colour. (If you have ideas for Kate please drop a comment!)

Colour, colour, colour

Yes I’m craving colour at the moment. Great big dollops of saturated colour. So I love these shots styled by Jakob Solgren. Sometimes quirky, sometimes bold, perhaps a little subtle, perhaps not. Great ideas to steal too. Loving the torn artwork in the first photo. The pink dresser juxtaposed with the psychedelic green dining room. Turquoise and chinese red nursery? Just a few calming Scandi white rooms too from real rooms, family rooms to some just a little more haute. All I know is I think though I need a pink plaid rug for my sofa and one can never have enough kilims…pink kilims!

If you like this post wait till you see what Kim has coming later today 🙂

Tobi Fairley

It’s Friday, thank gawd, and what a rough week it’s been. I battled the flu, and I’ve been on pins and needles waiting for my younger sister to go into labour with her first kid (she was due on Wednesday). I have the day off from work today so my husband and I decided to tackle laying floating hardwood flooring in the master bedroom (which has been sitting in boxes piled up in the bedroom for MONTHS). It’s GORGEOUS hardwood and I’ll get some photos on here eventually of it. But for now I need a little pick-me-up, and I think some photos from the portfolio of Little Rock, Arkansas based interior designer Tobi Fairley should do the trick. She clearly enjoys playing up a space with lots of pattern and pretty colour choices. I couldn’t help but smile as I snatched up these photos from her website.
