The importance of good lighting

Posted on Thu, 25 Oct 2012 by KiM

Falken Reynolds (from my previous post) happen to be spokespeople for Philips line of LED light bulbs, and utilized a Gastown loft they designed to ilustrate the importance of decent lighting (and the beauty of light by LED bulbs). I thought this was worthy of a mention because these photos REALLY show you what significant impact lighting can have in a space. I’m not a designer so sometimes I tend to forget the “rules” but this team has come up with 5 important tips I wanted to share, which I think are very well illustrated with the photos of this loft. (Read more about it here). (LOVE the tiffany blue wall!!!)
Tip #1: Have different lights for multiple purposes
Tip #2: Use dimmers everywhere
Tip #3: Light tabletops and countertops
Tip #4: Take cues from natural light
Tip #5: Light the things you love

Serge Mouille lighting

Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 by KiM

On Monday Jo blogged the interior photography of Hallie Burton, and in that post were a couple of photos of a VERY cool light fixture. A reader named Martha asked about it, and I told her it was the creation of Serge Mouille. She noted that since I had already blogged about Jieldé lights (here and here), that I might be up for featuring another French lighting design. I was certainly up for the challenge, as I have coveted Serge Mouille fixtures for some time now. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be owning one of these beauties anytime soon as they are awfully pricey. Damn.

Simple

… and damn clever. Found in the portfolio of photographer Lesley Unruh. (Don’t you just love the simplicity of this shot?). From Home from the Hardware Store: Transform Everyday Materials into Fabulous Home Furnishings by Kathleen Hackett and Stephen Antonson with photography of course by Lesley.

Light lust

I love the Giogali chandelier designed by Angelo Mangiarotti in 1967. Love. I’m thinking of one in my dining room. I’m also loving these fabulous photos featuring the Giogali in all its glory by Jim Bastardo (via Big Leo). Makes my decision so much easier. Just what a good commercial photographer should do. Capture an image that captures your dreams. (You can see Kim’s post on Jim Bastardo here.)

Reader request – bedside pendant lights

Posted on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 by KiM

Finally – a reader request! It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to do one of these posts (sorry to all those readers who have sent in requests and I haven’t been able to get to them). This week’s request comes from Candice: We are renovating at the moment and my husband has agreed to have bedside pendant lighting in our bedroom, so I was wondering if you had any good examples. I love rice paper lanterns but would probably go for something long and skinny rather than round. I agree that something on the slimmer side looks best but as you’ll see below, there are many options. I love bedside pendant lights as they aren’t really a typical option for that location.
