Stalking old meets new

Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015 by midcenturyjo

Georgian facade vs modernist interior. That’s how the real estate agent describes this Woollahra, Sydney home. “An Iain Halliday creation, this house has a dramatic mix of timber and glass behind its heritage facade. Floating above a moat in a walled courtyard, it’s your ‘castle’ of modernist design.” Yada, yada, yada. Let’s just say “yum”. Link here while it lasts.

Home 11

Light floods through generous skylights into this repurposed former garage in Amsterdam by i29. Clean lines, contemporary materials, simple spaces that speak for themselves. Stark white with walls of oak and accents of black all grounded by a stunning mossy green and white carpet.

An elegant bathroom

The folks of Minosa Design have gone and done it again. They sent us photos of one of their latest projects and as always, I am wishing to gawd I had the time and energy to redo my super annoying no-counter-space-whatsoever and no-outlet bathroom. Between that tub, the marble, the Gubi Adnet mirror and all that space I am dying right now. Minosa’s attention to detail is impeccable. AH this is SO GOOD! New meets old in Medindie

Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015 by midcenturyjo

A historic facade and thoroughly modern out the back. Yes another fabulous old meets new Aussie extension. In the suburb of Medindie in the inner-north of Adelaide, South Australia. By William Burton Leopardi. I think the architects description of how it all came about is great.

“Don’t kill the tree!” A gnarly pepper tree formed the planning challenge of an addition for a young family to their Victorian era home. A pool, small block, desire for light, space and ‘room to grow’ rounded out the brief and reaffirmed the challenge. Space for all, parents and kids, and an enthusiasm to embrace this as the “opportunity of a lifetime” allowed for delightful layering of function, whimsy and contemporary eclectism – oh…..and “don’t want to see the kitchen.”

Contemporary sophistication

With a stunning ocean view that could easily overwhelm any interior, Sydney design studio Decus have created a modern home with a luxury beach-meets-city sophistication that more than holds its own. Tamarama House is about drama and retreat, light and dark, private and public, casual and classy… and seriously sexy bathrooms.
