WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

• What’s the old warning in showbiz? Never work with children or animals? I’m not going to heed the advice. First up we have Modern Playhouse… giving kids a space of their own to dream and play. Fun and stylish!

• Ok so here comes the animal part. Not quite decor in the strictest meaning but Kim and I couldn’t resist these gorgeous pet portraits by Alexa Hanna of Doodlie Bop Pet Photography. I just want to rub all their bellies and crinkle up their ears. If you can hang your kids’ portraits on the wall why not your fur babies?

• Grant Sonnex is a contemporary furniture maker but just saying that is doing him an injustice. He’s a master craftsman and his beautiful, sustainable furniture pieces are almost sculpture. My favourite? The Yup’ik chair, his interpretation of the classic Windsor chair.

• Be still my beating heart. The Hepsi range of rugs by Loom. I will own you one day. I will. I will. Swoooooooon!!

This reader request comes from Melinda: “My partner and I are renovating our 130 year old semi in Sydney, he wants carpet on the stairs (because apparently I ‘clunk’… which to be perfectly honest I do) and I want to stain the original timber. I’m thinking a stair runner may be the perfect compromise. I would be very much appreciative if you could dig into your amazing picture resources for stair runners.” Here are some photos of inspirational stair runners for you Melinda, the first being my absolute favourite EVAH.

We received this request via email last month from Eileen: (and I finally found some time to scour my photo stash)

“I’ve always lived in older homes with wood floors, but I recently purchased an 80’s tract house with wall-to-wall carpet. The carpet has to be replaced now, but it’s going to be a few years before I can afford to put in wood. Can you pull together some photos of inspiring living rooms with carpet? Is there such a thing?”  I have selected some photos of living rooms with wall-to-wall carpet (and if it’s not wall-to-wall, pretend it is) to help give Eileen some ideas. I’d suggest a very neutral (cream or very light grey) berber or a sisal-type carpet (but not a rough sisal) and then layer some fun area rugs on top (kilims and cowhide are my favs). Being the owner of a plethora of cats, carpet is my worst enemy. So might I suggest something a little zany. If your subfloor is plywood and is in decent shape, how about sanding it smooth and then painting it in the meantime? I’ve seen this a few times and think it looks great considering the inexpensive material.

Janine wrote us with a particular request: “With all the creativity in modern design–angles, curves, patterns, and textures–why do the shapes of area rugs always seem to be rectangular? I’m looking for an interestingly shaped rug, something asymmetrical perhaps. I have, of course, seen nicely shaped animal hide rugs and would love to find photographs using that idea but, please, not striped or spotted. Seen anything like that?” After searching through MANY photographs to find non-rectangular rugs, I came up with only round and animal hide. But considering all the different colours of animal rugs you can get these days, I think that’s a great option. I bought one for my living room because it’s such a small and narrow space – rectangular would have made it seem even more narrow. And, well, rectangular is boring. I’m not sure why stripes and spots (my favs) are not an option for Janine, but here are some ideas…

My love for zebra rugs has existed for some time now, as I mentionned in a previous post. I’m talking FAUX zebra. Real zebra would be VERY WRONG. I have never owned a zebra rug but would so love to get my hands on one (or three). I love anything graphic and black/white is my favourite colour combination so zebra rugs are right up my alley. Here are spaces that…*sigh*…include a lovely zebra rug.
