Dog on a chair…and an interview

Posted on Wed, 9 Apr 2008 by KiM

Claudia of sofa blog emailed with a link to the cutest photo I’ve ever seen. It’s one of my favourite chairs with one of my favourite dogs. Too cute for words, really. (Thx Claudia!)

And thanks to Shauntelle for posting this interview of me on her blog A Beautiful Abode.

SPI Design is the collaboration between Sarah Shetter and Alison Palevsky, who “share a design aesthetic that mixes the California lifestyle with both ancient and modern traditions”. Love the use of rich timber furnishings and neutral palettes with fabulous bold artwork.

You know that feeling when you make a connection with a photograph. When you are flicking through the pages of one of your favourite magazines and there’s an image that stays with you long after you’ve put it down. Way way back in early January 2007 I scanned and uploaded an image of a vintage map quilt to my flickr account that caused some interest. Part of the Elle Decoration feature on gallery Caparrelli the images included wonderful artwork by Susan Stockwell (those are her map dresses). Now I know who the photographer is. Viewing Sean Myers’ portfolio is like revisiting old favourites. He photographed that story that I loved so long ago. He also took the amazing photos of a quirky Japanese retro styled home that I have loved for ages. You’ll have to go to his portfolio to see those. While you are there you must must must see his personal work capturing a quirky and inspirational Greenwich House. I have loved his work for so long. Now I have the name!

“The work of our firm is built upon a series of oppositions that are meant to set up a dynamic tension: privacy and exposure, light and shadow, mass and plane. The site inspires the form. Through a careful response to its orientation, context and topography, we allow each design to evolve naturally from the character of its site. The ground anchors the design while the roof acts as a counterbalance unfolding above the landscape.” Such wonderfully thought-out spaces and beautiful materials. I’m officially wowed.
