Stalking Alexandria

Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014 by midcenturyjo

Even a rottweiler and a security gate could not stop me from stalking this Alexandria, Sydney home. An unassuming brick facade opens to light filled open plan living with bamboo lined courtyard. Great kitchen, cool bathroom, fab art and a sweety for a dog. Link here while it lasts.

The latest happenings at 47 Park Avenue

Posted on Sun, 13 Apr 2014 by KiM

It has been ages since I featured one of my favourite blogs, 47 Park Avenue (see here and here). Michael (and his partner Jonathan) are the proud owners of my dream home, and have been renovating and decorating it with so much love, creativity and chicness that I am blown away each time I see more of their progress. Take this bathroom for example. They had not touched it since moving in and Michael finally decided to have a go at it – on the cheap. Because how long can you live with a nasty bathroom containing carpeting (GAH!) and floral chintz?!

Michael ripped out the carpet, re-faced the tub with leftover chipboard (one of my favourite materials), used leftover paint on the wall, floor and ceiling, and picked up some tile paint to paint over the ghastly flowers. All Michael ended up purchasing (aside from the paint) was the light fixture and linen basket. Gorg!!!

Here are some other spaces Michael has been working on around his house, including some amazing artwork recently purchased (including Chloë Sevigny shot by Terry Richardson!).

Since my last post about 47 Park Avenue, Michael has since opened up an online shop, with some to-die-for pieces. My favourites are below, including an adorable sheepskin footstool, neon signs and ghetto bunting. So fun!

Working on a Saturday

Posted on Sat, 12 Apr 2014 by midcenturyjo

If you have to go to work on a Saturday I couldn’t think of a better place than the Birkenstock Australia HQ. Sustainability, quality, craftsmanship… not just Birkenstock but the design by Melbourne Design Studio. Yes please! Read more about the brief and the designers’ approach to the project here.

P.S. Why am I obsessed by working on a Saturday all of a sudden? I have a new business, Feast and Co. Pardon the website as it is still in development but we are all about catering and functions based in a beautiful old 1916 home. We’re super busy this weekend with two weddings. Yikes! I better get off this blog and back to the bride. Hopefully photos and background story soon.

Punch of colour

A unconventional way to add some colour to your home – paint a door neon. The result is bold and fun. I love this colour combo. (Photo by Lucas Allen)

Manifold Architecture Studio

Manifold Architecture Studio, based in New York, really knows how to make a space come alive with their creativity and innovative space planning. From lofts to small apartments, Philipp and Kit von Dalwig’s designs are fairly simple yet super functional. They rocked that staircase in photo #4.
