The surprise behind the door

Posted on Wed, 27 Jun 2018 by midcenturyjo

A cursory glance at this Southampton’s house with its gabled roof line and greying shingles might lead you to expect an interior chock full of blue and white patterns, white painted furniture, sisal rugs on whitewashed floors and driftwood chandeliers. Perhaps some chrome and glass lantern style lighting and a sizeable collection of Chinese urns. Open the door to this house and you’re in for quite a surprise. Statement designer furniture from the 60s to the 80s, modern art, colour, metal and lucite. It’s like a well curated 1stdibs dealer’s showroom and you know what? It works. Fun, fabulous, personality packed, the perfect place to retreat to if your idea of Hamptons style is more style than “Hamptons”. Waterfront Estate by Frampton Co.

A colourful and unique home in London

Posted on Sun, 24 Jun 2018 by KiM

Me and trends do not get along. AT ALL. Unique interiors are where it’s at and this home in London is about as unique as it gets. I mean, LOOK AT THE KITCHEN CABINETS! Italian designer Martino Gamper and New Zealand artist Francis Upritchard live here, and have taken uniqueness to the next level with bold colours, lots of art and funky furniture. A total distraction from the ordinary, detail-lacking architecture. Via Architectural Digest Spain, photos by Pablo Zamora.

L’appartement Jardin des Tuileries

After having watched the dearly departed Anthony Bourdain’s Layover episode in Paris while eating dinner last night, and seeing such a beautiful space like this apartment in le Jardin des Tuileries, I could totally see myself living it up in that incredibly unique city. (And I speak French!) L’Appartment Parisien did a wonderful job adding some understated elegance here. And that multi-coloured set of Gubi beetle chairs has me totally sold.

Stalking a stylist’s home

Posted on Fri, 15 Jun 2018 by midcenturyjo

I’m stalking in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale but it doesn’t feel like I’m really real estate stalking. I feel like I know this home so well. You see it belongs to stylist and writer Heather Nette King and I’ve lurked on her instagram account for years. (That doesn’t sound too creepy does it Heather?) It’s a beautiful family home full of character and colour, light and personality, just like I hope my own home will be when it finally emerges from its stalled renovations. Link here while it lasts.

A mid-century home of art collectors

Posted on Thu, 14 Jun 2018 by KiM

San Francisco designer Alison Damante calls this “New York minimalism meet Berkeley funk”. Here’s the scoop on this inspiring project: Recent East Coast transplants wanted a sparse, white backdrop for their expansive art collection, as well as an authentic design response to their mid-century home, with its bay views, exposed wood beams and original 1960’s cast concrete fireplace. Vibrant colors, handcrafted fixtures and modern furniture take cues from each installation, unifying the space and meshing art with life. I really dig this house. Everything about it architecturally is awesome, and then Alison kept the basics all in bright white so you can really change things up easily by swapping out the art/cushions/accent chairs etc. (Architecture: YamaMar Photography: Bruce Damonte)
