Spanish minimalism

Posted on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 by midcenturyjo

Cadaquès Apartment by Francesc Rifé. Black. White. Unashamedly modern. Distilled rustic references. White void. Monolithic fireplace anchoring the room. Hero of minimalism… storage. So which do you prefer Spanish minimalism or Danish? (The great photography is by Eugeni Pons. An amazing portfolio of amazing architecture!)

Danish minimalism

The first of two minimalism posts today. Wooden wings held apart by concrete. White voids anchored by a monumental grey brick fireplace. Clean sparse line. Hero of all minimalist interiors… storage. Villa Petersen by Cornelius + Vöge. Photos by Adam Mørk. (Architect turned photographer. Can’t you tell? Takes an architect to understand an architect and get those details just so. His portfolio is an amazing collection of the best of the best architecture.) Did you notice that interestingly the living area has been styled two ways? Even the owners can’t be that minimalist.

Monday’s pets on furniture – part 3

Posted on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 by KiM

If you’d like to send me photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow my basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it. And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.comand PLEASE don’t send closeups of your pet!)

This is DABU, our 2 year-old Japanese Chin. He loves our 60’s “newspaper” arm chair.
– Eduardo & Georgia (Brazil)

This is our neighbor’s dog Turtle, who paid us a visit, choosing to sit on this little cow chair from Anthropologie. She tried out our Marimekko ottoman and had a quick jump on the Johnathan Adler couch. Of all the choices, this folding chair was her preferred seat. This puppy likes to jump on and off furniture and rarely is seen sitting quietly in one spot. She has been the only animal (or person) to oust our cat from this chair. Needless to say, the cat seemed glad to watch Turtle go and quickly curled up to sleep in her spot within minutes of her departure. I’m pretty sure the kitty slept with one eye open, to guard her precious spot against a possible second canine invasion.
Amy

We would like to participate and send you a picture of our 10 month old French Bulldog “Django”. Here on his favorite place on our Poul Kjaerholm PK31 3-seater.
– Felix, Katharina and Django (Germany)

I would like to submit “Gunther on Furniture”. He seems to prefer the table over the couch…
Andrea (Toronto)

This is Frankie the Pug. Our apartment is a shrine to him! The cushions were made by my mother who sent them to us in London from Sydney.
– Georgia

This is London’s favorite pastime.  Snug as a bug.
– Spookypug

This is little Cindy. She’s a 2 years old Lhasa Apso. This black couch is her favorite spot in the house. She sleeps like a person on it! It’s hilarious! She also like to rest on the top of the couch, like a cat!
– Renata (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil)

Pictured are Smokey Lonesome the Jack Russell and Chetty the Airedale dressed for St Paddy’s day. They are sharing a really nice love seat covered with a crummy cover to protect it from dog hair, mud and other dog type slobber!
– Sarah (Bethlehem, CT)

Their names are Walter (my grand puppy), Bear and Kahne. They live in Oklahoma City and think the couch was made for them. 🙂
Bear and Newman – life is good!!

Xander waking up after a nap in the afternoon sun. Dreaming of birds, no doubt.
– Kim (Chicago)

We have 3 wonderful cats. Dolce is the leader of the pack. He is a seven year old Siamese who is the love of our life. During the day, he likes lounging on Italian furniture, especially on pieces that suit his coloring. Other than that, he loves listening to hip hop and being admired. He is also a major foodie who loves to eat everything from steak and pasta to macaroons. We adore him!
– Karina (Los Angeles)

Here is my cat Nougat on an old armchair in the living room.
– Delphine (Lyon, France)

A picture of our pug relaxing in front of some Hygge and West wallpaper.
– Heather & Greg

This is Foxy the Welsh Terrier waking up in the morning & having a good stretch !
– Tom & Foxy (London, England)

Here is my cat Butler on my Eames DSW chair. I had been sat on it, working, and got up to make a cup of tea. As you can see, he has made himself very comfortable in a very short space of time and I didn’t have the heart to kick him off – especially as he goes so well with the chair, and contrasts so nicely with my pink cushion!
– Laura

This is Teacup (Japanese Bobtail, aka Hello Kitty) and Bleau (Great Dane, aka Scooby Doo). They enjoy nesting on our denim sofa. Such a tough day…
– Melissa (Denver, Colorado)

Joaquina is a French Bulldog that is basically part of the design of my apartment in São Paulo, Brasil, and an extention of myself. She is alowed everywhere in our place and always goes with me to clients homes. The first picture was taken at her friends house Carlota. They are lounging with the winter outfits in some gorgeous antique furniture. In the second picture joaquina is chilling in our black, red, and white bedroom at home. (notice the pillow in her homage.) Finally joaquina is sitting on the Jonathan Adler zebra rug enjoying the babyboy room I had just finished designing.
– Marina

here is a picture of my dog baker (after josephine baker) on my sectional waiting for me to finish making the kettle corn popcorn.  its one of his favorite snacks!
– deborah (williamsburg, brooklyn)

Mallie, our yellow lab, napping on the shelf of the cocktail table in the summer. The wood’s cool suface is what we believe is appealing.

This is my lab mix Keifer in his usual spot at the foot of the bed.  I recently decorated this room for a design blog challenge and he wouldn’t get up so I could take the final pictures. Looks better with him on it anyway 🙂
– Nicole (Victoria, BC)

Here is a dog on an mid-century styled couch. The dog was so chill and comfortable he barely even acknowledged I was there. I took these photo while shooting the interior for a client of mine.
Phil

Suzy on Lissoni table
David (Kim’s note: David kindly let me know the awesome art is by Damien Hirst and Jack Pierson)

Our “queen” of the house (Diesel) on family vaca at the trump in Chicago!
– Pravin (Chicago, Illinois)

Poinsettia the boston terrier sits on an original Eames aluminum chair.
– Claudia (Houston, Texas)

Black and white kitty is Farra (Fat Bastard) Fawcett, she is in our sunroom looking out the back garden.
Black and brown kitty is Moco Vinny in my stuffed office/studio & one by the front door on a little Danish chair.  She is with the Florida Feline Cosa Nostra, so you betta’ post her pic…she says.
– Pam (Orlando, Florida)

I have attached images of my two cats lounging on mid-century chairs. Scooter, my torty-calico, loves to spend her days on the Eames ottoman and chair. Note in the background is the miniature Vitra version… but she is too large for it! Wyatt prefers the Bertoia diamond chair to pass the day.
– Deb (Lakefield, Ontario)

Fredi’s an Ecuadorian Shih Tsu. She’s bilingual, as her humans are from Canada, i.e. she understands a combination of English & Spanish. Her Chinese is simply terrible though. She’s 3-1/2 years old and feels comfortable in “any” situation or venue.
Sigred

she is Lola…sitting on a white shopping trolley, doesn’ t look very comfortable 🙂
– Clelia (Catania, IT)
