A timeless take on modern Australian architecture by Noxon Giffen. Houses are about the human experience, how the building relates to the site and sustainability. This is contemporary architecture that is deceptively simple. Minimal at times but always at maximum stylistically. Starting with the Manning Road House (shortlisted in the 2012 Australian Interior Design Awards in the Residential Design Category) and moving on to other recent works it is easy to see why their clean simple lines are making the Australian design community sit up and take notice. P.S. Check out the serious over supply of iconic Australian midcentury furniture by Grant Featherston. Enough for a healthy deposit on a house! I’m in heaven.

Melbourne based architectural firm BKK Architects was founded in 2000 by Tim Black, Julian Kosloff and Simon Knott. These guys have got it going on. They have won a ton of awards, been featured in a zillion publications, and have captured my attention with their creativity and picturesque designs. I am in awe of the exteriors of the homes they have created. The imagination, attention to detail and understanding of the landscape is so inspiring. A handful of my favourites from their portfolio are below.

My twin sister sent me the link to the architecture and design firm of Incorporated, based in New York, and the heart palpitations began the second I started peeking through their residential portfolio. These guys are the shit. Seriously. This apartment they call bohemian, is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t even know where to begin. Its space after space of awe and wonder.

Let’s start with the dining room, and the birch sliding screen. It’s a work of art in itself and the perfect backdrop for the rough wood table. And then to mix things up unexpectedly, a couple granny-ish wing chairs. And if that wasn’t enough to stop your heart, an Adelman fixture rounds off the space.

The owners must REALLY love their kids, because there is a playhouse in the middle of the apartment. And it’s wrapped in the infamous Cole & Sons Woods to make it look like a tree house. *insert big smile here*

*insert even bigger smile here* This is my dream room. A retro niche to sit back and enjoy a book, swathed in Orla Kiely’s multi-stem wallpaper because having such a niche wasn’t cool enough.

CHECK THIS OUT – that room at the back at first glance looks like a kitchen…turns out it’s the CRAFT ROOM! No words…

Bedrooms are for relaxing, and this one does the trick. Beautiful panels as a headboard.

Freaking GENIUS idea of a graphic tile stripe as a backdrop for light/mirror/sink. I need to copy this in a bathroom ASAP.

These children’s bedrooms are so creative and fun it almost makes me want to have kids. Or go back in time 30 years.

I blogged back in March about itswhatiminto, a group of 6 editors reporting on all sorts of happenings (interiors, fashion, food etc.) in South Africa. Sara, one of their editors, emailed to let us know about a fantastic apartment they featured recently. I love it and another one I found on their site so I thought I’d feature both. This first one is the apartment of Adam Levy. He is one cool guy and his place is incredible – the views are to die for thanks to one huge wall of windows, and his eclectic mix of furniture is the right amount of funky. (A man with a large set of Panton chairs is a man after my own heart).

This next one is a bit less modern, a bit more vintage but still funky and eclectic. It is the home of Gina and Bruce Anderson and several dogs. (Again, after my own heart, but this time with animals!) Such a warm and friendly dwelling.
