Out the back

Posted on Tue, 26 Apr 2016 by midcenturyjo

It’s what Australian architects seem to do so well. The extension, the addition to an old house that opens the living areas up and out. House facades and streetscapes are maintained while out the back clever two storey additions fulfil family needs for modern living. Love the monochromatic palette of this home warmed by the rich wood accents. Contemporary, clean lined, sleek and stylish (although I’m a little worried that, at least here in Australia, the Flos Lighting Aim Lamps are in danger of going the way of Tom Dixon’s Beat Lights and become ubiquitous). A kitchen/dining nook makeover

Nothing says classic like a black and white kitchen – especially white uppers and black lower cabinets. Throw in a white marble countertop, gold pendants, faucets and hardware, some Tolix stools and a marble Saarinen tulip table and you have just about the best combination EVER. Magnolia remodel

This remodel has managed to blow me away. Another one masterminded by SHED Architecture & Design. Located in Seattle, this 1914 craftsman had the exterior and main floor reworked to include a new kitchen, bathroom, laundry and backyard connection whilst keeping original details intact. Modern now blends with classic details and brings this house from ineffective to WOW.

Before and after

As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to share some before and after photos from ARCH angels Architects’ portfolio. Always fun to see how a space can be transformed – in this case even some staircases!

down in Løkka

This is one of the most inspiring posts I have shared in a while, IMHO. A huge thanks to Silje for tipping us of to this in an email recently: This is the Tumblr of a friend of a friend. They’re a newly married couple in their 20s, and got an apt. in the old part of Oslo, Norway, this summer. They’re both incredibly talented and hard-working, and they have just renovated their tiny apartment ALL by themselves. Their style is typically Norwegian, using “honest” materials (as well cal it), thrifted stuff, secondhand furniture and a mixing it to a delightfully minimalist style. Well worth a wee looksy, especially the before and after pictures of the livingroom/kitchen! The blog is named “down in Løkka“, Løkka being a nickname for Grünerløkka, a hipster/old part of Oslo. I am completely in awe of all of the work they have done on their tiny pad. And it is beautiful, and perfectly minimal. I am so impressed.
